Project Minerva is an array of four small telescopes dedicated full time to searching
for Earth-like exoplanets around nearby stars. This project is a collaboration among
four institutions, University of Montana, Harvard University, Pennsylvania State University
and the California Institute of Technology.
The funding for UM will goes towards the purchase of one of the four 0.7-meter telescopes
for use in the Minerva array. All four telescopes will be attached to a single state-of-the-art
fiber-fed spectrometer for the detection of small rocky planets in orbit around nearby
stars. The goal is to detect and characterize these exoplanets in the habitable zones
of the stars. A second goal is to investigate recently discovered extrasolar planets
and characterize their radii and interior composition.
